Code Architecture was founded by Sebastian Monroe in 2014. Its design story reaches further back through generations of makers, inventors and builders whose work connected practical problem-solving with imagination.

The family narrative begins with Maude Violet Shields Macgowan. During and after her work as a nurse in the First World War, Maude explored practical ideas for domestic equipment, including an attachment for a vacuum cleaner. The surviving family account connects that idea with a later visit to Electrolux in Sydney.

Ronald Battie Brand later ran Southern Electrics. Family records associate his work with the Rex washing machine, an appliance that combined washing and spinning in one drum and used a distinctive manual gear selector.

Beryl Brand, née MacGowan, worked as a home economist in Adelaide. The family account describes her testing early domestic freezer technology and presenting a regular radio segment about home economy.

The next generation brought design into the making of homes. Jenny Brand Monroe Tyler participated closely in the construction of a family home at Mount Nebo in the 1970s, working alongside architect Barry Walduck and contributing directly to the build.

Sebastian’s early interest in architecture grew through drawing, model-making and studying the plans of that childhood home. Those experiences connected design decisions with construction, climate and everyday life.

He later studied architecture at the University of Queensland and the University of New South Wales, graduating in 2000. His subsequent work has crossed architecture, interiors, construction knowledge and digital planning tools.

This history is presented as a family narrative and remains subject to archival and editorial verification before publication. Its enduring theme is the same one that informs Code Architecture today: thoughtful design grows from curiosity, making and care for how people live.
