Seismo
The first incarnation of the Kutleshi family home is called the Seismo. Growing up Jenny Monroe took her son Sebastian to her part time job at the local seismograph station at Mount Nebo. Jenny sometimes had to go to meet face to face with the geologists at the Geology Department at the University of Queensland. The geologist asked Jenny if she would like to bring her young son on a tour of the geology department on her next visit. The geologists explained to the ‘young aspiring designer’ how the earth was made up of techtonic plates and the difference between igneous and sedimentary rocks.
The inspiration of the cladding in it’s layering form comes from the layering of sedimentary rocks found across the ancient landscape of Australia. The name Seismo was given to a very large “carpet python” (Morelia spilota) that was approximately 4 metres long and 20 centimetres in diameter that inhabited the seismograph station and would often be found slithering out the door on arrival.
